From 1863 to 1865, over 5000 wounded Confederate Soldiers were brought to High Point, NC by train and treated at the wayside hospital, The Barbee Hotel, formely the Bellvue Hotel, which was across the street from the train depot. Fifty of these soldiers were know to have died while at the hospital and were buried at various gravesites around the town. It is unknown if they died of their actual wounds or of smallpox, which was in epidemic in the area at the time. About 10 years later, the bodies were all moved to the Oakwood Cemetery and marked accordingly.
Pvt. McCarty who enlisted in Edgefield,South Carolina April 15, 1861 was reported on a register of the General Hosptial #3 High Point, NC as admitted to the hospital MArch 19, 1865. It should be noted the Barbee Hospital was privately run until mid March 1865 when the Confederate Government took over the hospital. He was paroled May 1, 1865 however died the next day MAy 2, 1865 of disease. His death is confirmed in the Barbee Register have having died the same date.
