The funeral service for Ruth M. Andreasen, 110, of Stewartville, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Stewartville, with Rev. Wane Souhrada officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Stewartville.

Mrs. Andreasen died Friday, March 8, 2013, of natural causes at the Stewartville Care Center, where she had been a resident since November of 2006.

Ruth Mildred Poppen was born Feb. 8, 1903, in Parkersburg, Iowa, to John and Mary (Johnson) Poppen. She moved with her family at the age of six to rural Stewartville, where she attended rural school at the Waterloo schoolhouse and then worked with her family on the farm. Ruth was married on March 28, 1923, in Stewartville, to James G. Andreasen. Following their marriage, the couple farmed and raised their family in Pleasant Valley and High Forest Townships until retiring in 1969. They moved into Stewartville, where Mrs. Andreasen continued to make her home. Mr. Andreasen died on Oct. 4, 1985.

She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Stewartville, and was active in it's United Methodist Women's group. She was also a member of the Home Economics Club in Stewartville. She enjoyed handiwork especially crocheting, gardening and spending time with family and friends.

Ruth was the second oldest living person in Minnesota, and was among the 50 oldest living U.S. citizens at the time of her death. She was also one of the few remaining surviving spouses of a World War I veteran.

Ruth is survived by one daughter and two sons, Norbert, of Chatfield, Gordon (Elsie), of Stewartville, and Jane Hoeft, of York, Neb.; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James, her parents, a sister, Margaret Seehusen, a brother, Harold Poppen, daughter-in-law, Arlene Andreasen, and son-in-law, Robert Hoeft.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday March 12, at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday morning.
