Era Puett Courtney, 100, died Saturday, December 14, 2013 at Springs of Catawba. She was born April 23, 1913 in Collettsville, North Carolina to the late Henry R. Puett and Della Davis Puett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 70 years, Andrew Benson Courtney, and her brothers and sisters: Ullery, Ernest, Dale, Joe, Lane, Orin, Shea, Kathleen Puett Saunders and Clara Puett Seagle. She is survived by many nephews, nieces and cousins. Era, a member of Littlejohn United Methodist Church since 1936, was very active in church and the Gamewell community. She taught Sunday school classes, was a member of the choir, looked after Lelia Tuttle Park, did volunteer work at Caldwell Memorial Hospital, enjoyed square dancing, and helping Benson with a big garden. Era touched many lives with her ready smile, positive attitude and wonderful work ethic. She worked for 25 years at Morganton Full Fashion Hosiery, then another 25 years as a dental assistant for Dr. M.M. Forbes, a dentist in Lenoir. The funeral service was held Monday, December 16, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Littlejohn United Methodist Church with the Reverend Allen Boliek officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Pendry's Lenoir Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
