Bob was a veteran of World War II and part of the "the Greatest Generation." He was an artist and a sign painter and got his experience by traveling the country painting billboards for the Schlitz Brewing Company. He later formed his own company, Robert Cole Signs (later known as Graphicon), and ran that business with his wife, the late Dorothy E. Cole. He made and installed signage all over the Southeast including the time and temperature structure atop the Jefferson Standard building, which was quite a feat at that time. He later sold his commercial sign business and started a whole new career as a real estate developer. He bought land and built rental buildings near the Piedmont Triad Regional Airport. He even built a house at the age of 86.
Bob's hobbies were golf and photography. He took up golf later in life, but played until he was in his nineties. He was president of the Green Valley Men's Golf Association for many years, and was a member of the long-running senior group known as "The Dalton Gang." He was an excellent golfer and began shooting his age at 71. He loved photography and built his own dark room. He was the photographer at all his social events, including his Greensboro High School class of 1932.
Bob was a gentleman with a calm and peaceful demeanor. He was a man of few words, and his golf buddies nicknamed him "The Phantom" because, after rounds of golf, he would be part of social interaction, but would soon be gone before anyone knew he had left. He was a faithful husband and great father and grandfather and he will be missed every day by his friends and family.
He is survived by his daughter, Joy Core (Gary); his grandchildren, Scott Core (Raegan), Christy Strickland (Ken) and Ashley Core; and great-grandchildren, Ashlyn, Joe, Ryane and Macy.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m., Tuesday, September 29, 2015, at Forbis and Dick North Elm Street Chapel and also at other times at the home of Joy and Gary Core.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro NC, 27405.
