Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew R. Barnes, 20, of West Monroe, La.; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.; killed Feb. 14 when a suicide car bomber attacked his vehicle near Qa'im, Iraq. Also killed was Cpl. Rusty L. Washam. Lance Cpl Barnes was due to come home in March 2006 after being deployed since August. He graduated West Monroe High School in 2003 and played for the Rebels football team. He went on to college at the University of Louisiana at Monroe before he joined the Marines in May 2004. Matt loved God, his family, his church and serving his country through the Marine Corps. He is survived by his parents, Rick and Connie Barnes and his siblings, Jonathan and Kenda Barnes and his Aunt Rita Dispenza. The Marine Corps presented his family with a Purple Heart medal at the ceremony where he was buried with full military honors. He was 20.
