A 21-year old soldier, the son of an East Lynn fireman, has been killed in action in South Vietnam.
Pfc. Frederick G. Atkinson, son of Lt. Frederick G. Atkinson and the late Doris (Hines) Atkinson, 327 Euclid Ave., died Saturday after being wounded in battle.
According to a telegram received by the soldiers father yesterday from the Army: "Pfc. Atkinson died as the result of metal fragment wounds received while on operation against a hostile force."
Atkinson who had graduated the top soldier in his basic training company had been stationed in Vietnam for two months. He was a radio man with the First Infantry Division.
The soldier entered the Army, Aug. 16, 1965 and took his basic training at Ft. Dix, N.J. He was then assigned to Ft. Benning, Ga., where he was graduated from radio school with high honors.
The war hero was born in Lynn and was a graduate of St. Mary's Boys' High, class of 1962. He was the manager of the football and hockey teams while at St. Mary's.
He worked at the Child World Inc., store in Swampscott and was manager of the toy dept. of Child World Inc., in Rich's Dept. Store on Highland Ave., Salem.
He also leaves his stepmother, Mrs. Eva (Roy) Atkinson; a brother, Peter, a senior at St. Mary's Boy's High; three sisters, Sister Brian Marie, of the Sisters of Notre Dame, stationed at Notre Dame Academy, Hingham; Mrs. Mary Kariannes of Middleton and Claire an eighth grade student at St. Mary's School; two stepbrothers, Robert Roy of Lynn and Leo Roy Jr. of Los Angeles; three stepsisters, Mrs. Bernice Sullivan and Miss Doris Roy, both of Lynn; and Mrs. Teresa Mahoney of the Philippines.
