Sgt. 1st Class Travis S. Bachman of Garden City, Kan., lived in Texas, at Friona, Bovina and Borger, before moving to Garden City with his family in 1991. He graduated from Garden City High School in 1995 and attended one semester at Garden City Community College. Travis enlisted with the Kansas National Guard in 1993 while still in high school. As a member of the Guard he was deployed three times to Fort Riley, Kosovo and Iraq. His father had been in the Marine Corps before Travis was born, and his uncle also had been a Marine. While home in Garden City, he worked as a department manager at The Home Depot and was a member of the American Legion, Harry H. Renick Post No. 9. He and his family attended First Southern Baptist Church. In his leisure, Travis enjoyed playing football and had played semi pro with the Rough Riders. He also enjoyed golf, softball, coaching soccer and taking his son to Lee Richardson Zoo. He deployed for Operation Noble Eagle in 2002, providing security at military bases in Kansas. He was currently on his second overseas deployment in Iraq and was to return home in late August 2007. Travis died when an improvised explosive device exploded near his vehicle at age 30. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Madge Horton and Kenneth Hampsten.
