Daniel was born to Thomas Garwood and his second wife Margaret Hancock. He wed Susannah Collins, daughter of John Collins and Ruth Woolston, in Burlington, County, New Jersey on April 11, 1737. They lived in Evesham Township, in what is now Mount Laurel Township. Daniel was a farmer. In 1745, he received fifty acres of land from his father's estate and at that time owned two stills.
