Born March 17, 1918, in Glade, she was the daughter of the late James Robert and Mary Catherine Adkins Ward.
Mrs. Cales was a lifelong resident of Summers County, a member of Hinton Church of Christ and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Cales, Feb. 1, 1979; an infant daughter, Edna Cales; an infant son, James Russell Cales; and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth Junior "Bill" Cales of Washington, Ind., Tonie Franklin Cales and his wife, Beatrice, of Greensboro, N.C., and Jerry Gene Cales and his wife, Christina, of Beckley; six daughters, Helen Wood of Brooks, Della Savino and her husband, Charlie, of Beckley, Vera Buckland of Fort Wayne, Ind., Connie of Fayetteville, Florence Lilly and her husband, Rassie, at home and Susan Cales Scott and her husband, Tom, of Meadow Creek; two brothers, Jesse Ward of Beckley and Ed Ward of Hix; two sisters, Fannie Holland of Cleveland, and Lottie Norman of St. Charles, VA.; 25 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; and a great-great grandchild.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22nd at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, Hinton, with Pastor Eddie Johnson officiating. Burial followed in Fox Cemetery, Brooks.
