Virgil Bird: born March 21, 1843 at Stoughton, MA, the son of George and Betsy Bird.

He was an 18 year-old Bootmaker from North Easton, MA, when he enlisted at Readville, MA on August 19, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Private in Co. K. Having been engaged with the Regiment in the Peninsula Campaiign, including the Siege of Yorktown, Bird became ill with diarrhea and was admitted to the General Field Hospital at Harrsion's Landing, VA on Aug. 11, 1862 and sent by transport to Ft. Monroe. He was admitted to Hampton Gen. Hospital at Fort Monroe on Aug. 18th having contracted Typhoid Fever and was subsequently discharged due to disability, caused by Incipient Phthisis, at Ft. Monroe, VA on Sept. 28, 1862.

Following his discharge Virgil resided at Easton and Brockton, MA, where he worked as a helper in a shoe and awl shop. At age 21 he married Lizzie C. Randall, age 17 and the daughter of Lemuel and Mary A., at Easton, MA on July 10, 1864. There were no children born to the marriage.

Virgil was a member of A. St. John Chambre Post # 72, Grand Army of the Republic, Stoughton, MA. He died at age 84 of Arterio sclerosis and Chronic Interstitial Nephritis.
