Tragedy
Thirty-six year old son, Boden Karbonik, part owner of the family appliance store, was shot and killed by police in a story that was reported in newspapers across the country and in places as far away as Australia. The tragic incident began with Boden shooting tin cans at San Pedro's Cabrillo Beach with a target gun. After being told by a lifeguard to leave the beach, he came back with another gun and was met by a policeman. Hundreds of beach goers witnessed with terror the resulting shootout involving police from 11 squad cars and Boden who took shelter in a World War II Army pillbox on a cliff overlooking the beach. As Boden poked his head out of an iron clad door, he was shot in the forehead by police. No police or bystanders were harmed. Family reported that Boden had recently exhibited signs of a psychiatric nature and that is wife was suing for divorce.
