Victim of Delta Flight 191 Jumbo Jet Crash

Son of Charles George Haselhorst, Jr. and Cecelia Perrin

On August 2, 1985, Charles John Haselhorst was killed aboard the doomed Delta Air Lines jumbo jet Flight 191 carrying 167 passengers and crew on a flight from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Los Angeles with a stop at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. On final approach to Dallas-Fort Worth, the plane crashed and exploded during a heavy thunderstorm when it was caught in a microburst, killing 136 aboard the plane and an additional person on the ground. Most survivors were sitting in the tail section of the plane. The crash of Delta Flight 191 was the subject of a television movie, "Fire and Rain," released in 1989.

Born at St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Charles George Haselhorst, Jr. and Cecelia Perrin, Charles John Haselhorst was a resident of Hermosa Beach, California at the time of his death. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served in the United States Navy from July 2, 1965 to June 30, 1968. His father, also a Navy man, was killed in action during the World War II Battle of Iwo Jima on February 21, 1945.

Charles George Haselhorst, Radarman 3rd class, was killed in action on February 21, 1945, when his ship, the USS Bismarck Sea, was sank in the Battle of Iwo Jima. Hit by two Japanese kamikazes, the USS Bismarck Sea sank with the loss of 318 men. In spite of darkness, heavy seas and continuing air attacks, 605 survivors were rescued from the sea over a period of 12 hours. The Bismarck Sea was the last US Navy aircraft carrier to be lost during World War II.

MOTHER
Cecelia Harriet Perrin, daughter of Fermin Perrin, Sr and Alta Ettling Perrin. Firmin Perrin, Sr, died of pneumonia in the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. In the 1920 census, Cecelia & her brother Fermin Jr & sister Marie are found living together in an orphanage. Sometime before her sister Marie died of diptheria in 1926, she and her siblings had been reunited with their mother, now Mrs Alta Pfeifer, and were living with their new stepfather, William Pfeifer, and stepsister Hazel.
