During World War II, being of Japanese descent, she was sent to an internment camp - Gila River Arizona - in 1942. Fluent in both Japanese and English, Lily was recruited from the camp to go to the University of Michigan and teach Japanese to military intelligence officers and others. The graduates of this course are said to be among the most effective interrogators in the Pacific Island campaigns of 1944 and 1945. A Medal honoring Lily (Kobayashi) Terao’s service to U.S. Military Intelligence was later received by her sons.
Death
She was mugged by a purse-snatcher near her home in Los Angeles and died from her injuries.
