Father-in-Law of Joseph R Cates

Dr. Thomas A. Stewart was born September 14, 1822, in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. He was an early emigrant to the state of Illinois. He participated in the Califonia Gold Rush and returned to Illinois. In 1855, He was one of the first arrivals in what was to become Wise County.

Dr. Stewart married Julia A. Brady, sister of Judge W. W. Brady, of Wise County, February 8, 1842.

Dr Stewart, his wife and family, and brother-in-law, crossed the Red River Christmas Eve, 1855. The Stewart party was awe-struck by the green rolling plains and wind-blown winter grain fields, having come from the frozen, bleak countryside of Illinois.

Parker County was the original destination, but after crossing the West Fork of the Trinity where the winter rye was knee-deep and roving through the Cross-Timbers, the party settled on a location on Oliver Creek, began building a home a home started. Equally attractive to the Stewarts were the large-hearted people of the area that was to become Wise County.

Dr. Stewart brought in a heard of cattle and started a ranch on Sandy Creek. for a number of years, he was the pioneer doctor of Wise County. The Sand Hill community became their home for a number of years. He purchased a parcel of land in the Taylorville (later named Decatur) town square and established an apothecary.

In 1867, the family moved to Kansas, Colorado, California and Oregon finally back to Texas.

Stricken with an incurable disease, he returned to Decatur, and in June, 1899, died in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary G. Shown, surrounded by friends and relatives.
