Son of Samuel S. Alsop, Sr. (1810 – 8/1881) of Spotsylvania, Va. & Mary Hamit Purvis 1812 – 4/1885 of Spotsylvania, Va.

Company C "Gordon Rifles" of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County, 30th Virginia Infantry, Corse's brigade, Pickett's Division, 1st Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.

Residence: Spotsylvania County, VA.; 17 year-old student.
Enlisted on 5/23/1861 at Fredericksburg for 12 months' service, he was mustered into Company C, 30th Virginia Infantry, as a Private.
Appointed 3rd Corporal 9/1/1861.
Appointed 2nd Corporal 11/18/1861.
Reenlisted 2/14/1862 for 2 years' service; due $50 Reenlistment Bounty.
Mortally wounded, POW 9/17/1862 in the Battle of Sharpsburg/Antietam, MD.; died in nearby Samuel Beeler's house.

The 30th Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Fredericksburg, Virginia, in June, 1861. Men of this unit were from Fredericksburg and the counties of Spotsylvania, Caroline, Stafford, and King George.
