Author. Born of Cherokee ancestry, he grew up on a farm that he would later call "Mother's Cherokee allotment." His mother read him stories including "The Little Red Hen" and "Little Red Riding Hood," but not until discovering "Call of the Wild" did he enjoy reading. He enjoyed the novel enough to read it aloud to his dog and to dream of writing his own boy-and-dog story. Eventually he realized that dream via the novel "Where the Red Fern Grows" (1961). Other writings include "Summer of the Monkeys" (1976).
