Leia
March 1996 – February 7, 2010
CCF's Leia was euthanized the morning of February 7, 2010, due to age-related renal failure.

At almost 14 years old, Leia has been one of the oldest cheetahs at CCF. When Leia was only one year old, a farm worker killed her mother, even though she had not killed any of his livestock. Leia and her sister moved to the next farm where they tried to catch goats near the homestead, but were too immature and weak from hunger. The farmer, defending his livestock, shot Leia's sister but then realised that Leia was starving. He called CCF, and a trap cage was set and Leia was caught. By the time she got to CCF, she was near death, as she had been living without her mom for a couple of weeks at least. Staff at CCF were able to nurse little Leia back to health.

In her 13 years at CCF, Leia made lots of friends, cheetah and cheetah keepers. She was the most independent and the daydreamer of her pen mates. She would watch guinea fowls and wart hogs closely, just waiting for them to take one step too close. Despite her age, Leia remained very active, running with zeal as she chased the exercise lure with her pen mates Blondie, Dusty, and Sandy. She was one of the most focused at catching the rag. One of her favourite games was to stalk the lure. She would sit under a tree, hardly visible to spectators. As the lure passed, she would jump out to ambush her "prey."

Her keepers tried to make her as comfortable as possible. Once they knew her kidneys had stopped working and that there was nothing to be done, all of the CCF were able to give their last goodbyes. Leia was loved by many since she had been at CCF so long. She is missed so much.
