Albert Lincoln Bates was born 1st of July 1862, the 5th child and 4th son of Albert H. and Martha A. (Taber) Bates. He was born on the family farm, as was all of his siblings. The family had lived in the Moro Plantation area since his father, Albert, was a small boy.
Reviewing the U.S. Federal Census shows much about the life of Lincoln, as he was known to his family. The 1870 US Census lists Albert and his six siblings, along with his parents. Living on the farm next door is Sophronia (Maxion) Bates, Albert H.'s mother.
The 1880 US Census shows a now 18 year-old Lincoln still living with his parents on the family farm. He is listed as working there to assist his father. His three older brothers are also listed as farm laborers on the family farm. Grandmother Sophronia has moved from her own farm and is now living with the Bates family.
Albert Lincoln married Anne (McLaughlin) Tucker on 21 October 1893. She had been widowed in January of 1893 by the sudden death of her husband Charles and left with a 3 year-old son, Charles F. Anna and Lincoln would have 2 children of their own; Percy Lincoln, born in 1895 and Bessie Eva, born in 1897. Their happiness was short-lived, as Annie passed away on 18 Mar 1899 at the family farm in Mars Hill. The family had moved there after the marriage. With Annie's death, Lincoln and his two young children moved back to Moro Plantation to live with his parents. Annie's son Charles Tucker appears to have gone to live with his Uncle and Aunt John L. and Gertrude (McLaughlin)and Grandfather Henry McLaughlin.
