James "Jim" O. Peterson, 89, of Arnold, passed away Feb. 11, 2014 at the Callaway District Hospital. He was born July 18, 1924 to Emil and Esther (Trude) Peterson at Beatrice, NE. As a young boy he moved with his parents to Grand Island, NE. At the age of 14 he received Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord and loved to share his faith. He graduated from Grand Island High School with the class of 1942. Jim served in the United States Navy from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1946. After the service he went on to attend the Grand Island School of Business. On March 20, 1948, he was united in marriage to Sarah V. Simms at Arnold. Jim was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad as an accountant and in 1954, he and Sarah moved to the Simms Ranch north of Arnold where they raised Hereford cattle until retiring in 1979. He was a member of the Arnold Methodist Church, Loup Valley Good Sam's Club, and the American Legion Post in Arnold. He is survived by his wife, Sarah of Arnold; son, Roger (Shar) Peterson of Dunning; five grandchildren, Carl (Monique) Leach, Kyle Leach, Cole (Jenny) Leach, Kayla Leach, and Nichol (Jim) Kros; and eight great grandchildren, Audrey, Laura, Beau, Ruby, Eli, Brooklyn, Emily and Colton. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, William "Bill"; and a daughter, Carol Leach. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 15, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Arnold. Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 17, 2014 at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell with military honors. Carpenter Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
