Custer County Chief, Thursday, January 6, 1972, page 7:
"James E. Herbert - Former Resident of Gates, Nebraska.
James Edwin Herbert was born on December 23, 1884 at Gates, in Custer County, Nebraska, and he passed away on December 28, 1971 at the Sea View Convalescent Hospital in Eureka, California, at the age of 87 years.
He farmed and ranched in central Nebraska until 1940 when he went to Eureka, California, where he worked for his boyhood friend, Walter Malloy who owned the Fluhuer Bakery, now known as the Master Bakery. Mr. Herbert retired in 1959.
He is survived by a nephew, Mr. Edwin Weisenreder, now of Eureka, California, formerly of Custer County and Broken Bow, Nebraska, and by a niece Louise, now Mrs. Alon Davis of Boise, Idaho. He is also survived by numerous great nieces and nephews in Idaho, Oregon, Washington and California.
Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on December 31, 1971, Friday, at the Pierce Mortuary Chapel in Eureka, California, with Rev. Wendell Ensor of the Methodist Church officiating. Mrs. Gladys Gregersen was organist.
Interment was made in the cemetery at Gates, Custer County, Nebraska."
NB: Jamie was probably born in Grundy Co., IA, where his parents lived from 1876 to 1886, along with Kit's Simms relatives. At the time of Jamie's death, it is likely that the surviving relatives were not aware of his birth place.
