James was the son of John Robson and wife Mary (Brown), and was born in Whittington, Northumberland, England. In 1850, the father and his family migrated from England to Illinois. Here James and his brothers (John, William and Robert) settled and raised their families. James became a naturalized citizen in 1870.

After the death of his wife, Jane Simms, James went to live with her niece, Rita (Sweeney) and husband Oscar Liddle, in Denver, CO.
