Capt., Co. B, 1st Va. State Reserves - CSA
Dr. Benjamin Dennis was a greatly respected physician. He died suddenly on the Old Dominion Steamer 'Wyanoke' enroute from NY to Richmond. The Virginia Medical Monthly, Volume 10, page 574 noted: "He possessed many qualities of head and heart that endeared him to friends and family. He was, until his health began to fail, a physician of ability and had an extensive practice. Years ago, he represented his district in the Virginia Senate, and while there he exhibited great interest in all proposed legislation for the good of the profession."
He applied for and received a presidential pardon for his service in the Confederate Army, having been subject to the draft of men between 40 and 50 years of age. He testified that as soon as possible he transferred from a command to become an Army Surgeon.
His mother was Rebecca Martyr Dennis, married to Benjamin Denis.
The seven children he had with Charlotte Bessom Dennis were: Marietta, Samuel, Virginia, Charlotte, Rev. Benjamin Dennis, Edward and Eleanor.
