Civil War Confederate Army Surgeon. During the Civil War he served as Medical Director of the II Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia and was Lieutenant General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson's personal surgeon. He attended to Jackson after his wounding at the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863, until his death on May 10.
