Clayton was the son of Clayton G. and Sarah Jerdone Coleman of Louisa County, Virginia (her obituary appears here).
Clayton attended the Virginia Military Institute in the class of 1859 but did not graduate. He thereafter attended the University of Virginia and then the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, from which he graduated in March 1861. He enlisted in Co. "G" (the "Frederick's Hall Greys"), 23rd Virginia Infantry, on 24 April 1861 at Frederick's Hall, Louisa County, Virginia. He was promoted Lt. Col. on 15 April 1862, but was elected Captain of Co. "G" upon reorganization of the Regiment on 21 May 1862 and chose to serve at that rank.
He resigned 30 October 1862, and accepted a commission as an Assistant Surgeon in the Confederate Medical Department on 8 April 1863. After the War, he practiced medicine until 1871 when he became a civil engineer in civil service.
He married Anna Sherrard Breedin of Winchester and had at least five children: Clayton G., Sherrard, Robert, Lucy and Caroline.
