Her obituary from the Custer County Chief, 27 December 1901, p. 8, col. 1.

"Simms: Hester Simms was born in Virginia, July 16, 1814. At the age of ten years, she moved with her parents to Springfield, Ills. She was married to Geo. S. Simms (sic, should be "Geo. D."), in 1832 settling in Knox county, Ills, where she resided until the death of her husband, June 10th, 1856 (sic, should be 1865). For nineteen years she has made her home with her children in Custer county, Nebr. She is the mother of thirteen children, six of whom preceded her into the other world. At death she had 40 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren. She died Dec. 18th, 1901. A short funeral service was conducted at the house by Rev. Trites. The remains were taken to Gates for burial. Her's was a beautiful christian character and a useful life."

After George died, Hester went to Custer County, Nebraska, in 1882 with her newly married daughter, Hettie (Mrs. Edgar N. Bishop) and took up a homestead on which she proved up her claim. She lived in a frontier home most of her life.

When Hester died at age 87, six of her seven sons (all except William T.) and one of her six daughters (Martha Grace) survived her.
