Official documents show his birth as 21 Dec 1862, and the date on this memorial reflects those documents. Yet he is enumerated in the 1860 census as being 6 months old, suggesting that his "real" birth was probably Dec 1859. Perhaps people did not pay attention to age in those days as they do now.
His father and uncles were among the first settlers in Dale, and many members of the family lived out their lives and are buried there. Many now rest in the South Medina Cemetery, on land donated by John's uncle, Capt. William Young.
John, however, was interested in the railroad, where he worked for most of his life. As a station agent, he moved frequently. In 1882, he married Alice E. Haffey in Avoca, MN. Their first son, Arthur Vincent, was born there a year later, followed by another son, John J. Young, in 1885.
By 1887, the family was living near Duluth, MN, where their third, and last, child was born: Harriet, namesake of John's mother, Harriet (Blessing) Young.
About 1906-7, the family removed to Pueblo, CO, where both John and Alice lived out their lives.
