John Henry Young was the eldest of eight children of Samuel & Mary (Shangle) Young. He was born in New Jersey, possibly in Sussex or an adjoining county.
About 1824, the family migrated north to Lansing, Tompkins Co., NY. There he met and married Harriet Blessing. Their first child was born in Lansing. At the time, John worked as a "boater", possibly along the Erie Canal.
The Youngs then migrated west to Dale, Outagamie Co., WI, about 1849-1850, where John's brother William had discovered rich farmland and established a small settlement. The parents, Samuel & Mary, along with their children and grandchildren all made the move.
John and many of his siblings, their wives, and children, are buried in Medina Cemetery, as are his parents.. This Cemetery is located on land donated by John's brother, William Young.
