Michael Haffey was born in Hilton, County Monaghan, Ireland. Family lore claims that his mother had a premonition of the coming potato famine, and the family attempted to migrate to America. On the way, the father died, and the family returned to Ireland to bury him.

In 1857, the family succeeded in migrating to America, settling in Shullsburg, Lafayette Co., WI. During the Civil War, Michael enlisted in Company C, 33rd Wisconsin Infantry. The 33rd ended the war in Tuskegee, AL, and were mustered out at Vicksburg in 1865. A few weeks later, on August 27, Michael married Frances Jerline Cobb in Macon County, Alabama.

The young couple moved north, and their daughter, Alice E., was born in August 1866 in Illinois, followed by two sons, William and John. Both boys died young. In 1872, Frances died in Murphysboro, IL.

Michael remarried, in 1875, to Sarah Jane Shannon, and they had seven children. By 1899, Michael is living in the Wisconsin Veterans Home, and he is suffering from dislocation of the right shoulder, piles, floating kidney, and his left lung was badly affected. He died at the home in 1919.
