Al was the son of Henry Albert Kinkel and Rosie Schaaf, the third of four children. His mother died when he was 6, and his father died five years later. His uncle, Louis Kinkel, a prominent butcher in Fort Morgan CO took in his nephew and raised him, teaching him the butcher trade.

Al married Nellie May Hoyt in 1922, and they had two sons - James and Jack. Al died in 1934 at the Veterans Hospital in Cheyenne, Wyoming, after an illness of several years.
