Former Henry resident passes away at age 100

HENRY - Bernice Bishop, 100, formerly of Henry, died peacefully at her home in Sunrise of Edina, Minneapolis, Minn., at 3:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011.

Born July 2, 1910, in Magnolia, Ill., to Charles Henry Bishop and Bessie Pearl (Cassell) Bishop, Bernice had just celebrated her milestone 100th birthday this past July with her family in attendance.

Surviving are her brother, W. Ellsworth Bishop of Chillicothe; a niece, Linda K. (Sterling A.) Smith of Sacramento, Calif.; a nephew, William A. (Gail) Bishop of Alamo, Calif.; two great-nieces, Claire L. Smith and Samantha G. Bishop; along with several dear cousins; her devoted caregiver, Mary Denison; and many lifelong friends in both Minneapolis and Henry.

She graduated from Sparland High School in June of 1928 as valedictorian and attended Brown's Business College in Peoria.

Bernice left Illinois for Minneapolis, Minn., and was employed by Roy H. Bjorkman's Women's Wear and Furs, as the credit and collections manager from 1929 to 1990, when the store closed. Her position allowed her to travel internationally for credit conventions.

Bernice was a member of the Society of Certified Consumer Credit Executives, Division of International Credit Association, in St. Louis, Mo.

She also was a previous member of the Credit Women International Career Club and the Putnam County Historical Society.

Following the closure of Bjorkman's, she was employed by Albrecht's Women's Wear until 1998.

She was a 50-year honored member of the Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church in Minneapolis, Minn.

A buffet lunch and visitation with the family will be held Sunday, March 13, 2011, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Calvert & Johnson Memorial Home, 513 Carroll St., Henry. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the family plot in the Henry Cemetery, where Bernice will join her parents and her sister-in-law, Opal (Albert) Bishop. The Rev. Lindsey Churchman will officiate.

Memorials or donations may be made directly to the Henry Cemetery, P.O. Box 355, Henry, Ill., to honor Bernice's passion for ongoing flowers and tending the grounds for those who have departed.
