Enlisted in the 2nd U. S. Cavalry as a private on March 15, 1855. Promoted to bugler and rose through the ranks to regimental sergeant major. Discharged for promotion and was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the 5th U. S. Cavalry on July 17, 1862. Promoted to 1st lieutenant upon reporting for duty. Promoted to brevet captain (Cedar Creek, VA) on October 19, 1864. Promoted to captain in
the 5th U. S. Cavalry on July 28, 1866.

Died of self-inflicted gunshot wound on June 12, 1869 at Fort McPherson, Nebraska as attested by Assistant Surgeon A. D. Wilson, USA.
