Private William H.H. Hiatt served in both the 7th and the 13th Iowa Infantry from 20 Feb 1864 to 17 Jun 1865. On 22 Jul 1864, while serving with Co. K, 13th Regt, Iowa Infantry during the Battle of Atlanta, he was captured by Confederate forces and imprisoned at the infamous Andersonville prisoner of war camp. He survived captivity and, after the war, married Cynthia Presnell on 26 Dec 1867 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. They settled in Nebraska where they farmed and raised 11 children. He died at Mary, Neb. and was originally buried in the Croker (or Crooker) Cemetery near Ainsworth. That cemetery later became abandoned and he was disinterred at the request of his descendants and reinterred at Fort McPherson National Cemetery on 10 Nov 1992. His original headstone from the abandoned cemetery was placed over his grave at Fort McPherson.
