US Army General. He graduated from North Platte High School in 1916, joined the National Guard, and served on the Texas border during the Pancho Villa Expedition. During World War I he served in France with the 4th Infantry Division and attained the rank of First Sergeant. Miltonberger received his commission in 1923 and advanced through the ranks in command and staff assignments with the 35th Infantry Division while working in the civilian sector as a postman and in bridge and road surveying and construction. During World War II he commanded the 134th Infantry Regiment in Europe as a Colonel, and he was promoted to Brigadier General and Assistant Division Commander of the 35th Division in 1945. In 1946 he was appointed Chief of the National Guard Bureau and promoted to Major General. He retired from the military because of ill health in 1947, and was an employee of the Nebraska State Engineer until retiring to his home in North Platte. Miltonberger's awards included the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman Badge and several foreign decorations.
