George Washington Jenkins, Sr.
06 May 1825 ~ 26 January 1896

Jenkins Dead.

For years “Jenkins and his Jennys” was a common expression and an every day sight on our streets. About a year ago the trio disappeared and but few knew what had become of them.

The old gentlemen’s eyesight has been bad for a long time but he was able to see enough to get about and to direct his team on the course to and from town, until about the time stated when he became totally blind and has been confined to his home, southeast of Spring Grove since then.

On Sunday morning it was announced that the old gentleman had passed away. On Monday at 11:00 o’clock a.m.., the Grand Army Post took charge of the remains and laid them to rest beside his daughter, in the Empire City Cemetery.

Deceased was an odd character; an inoffensive old man, whose affliction made him irritable at times, but who harmed none, or wish them harm. Let us hope that the lids which closed over the sightless orbs, on Sunday last, were lifted again from eyes that could behold the beauties of the land of eternal joy, by the will of the blessed Father, who “doeth all things well.”
