Dr. John Richey was the third son of John Richey, who was a Revolutionary War Veteran. John Richey Sr. moved, with his wife Elizabeth (Collings) Richey, five sons and one daughter from Virginia to Kentucky.

Dr. John swam the Ohio river in 1810 and settled in Scott Co. IN.

He married Sichy Collings, daughter of William Elston and Phebe (Hougland) Collings, on October 1, 1811 in Clark Co. IN.

Dr. John and Sichy build a six room house on a knoll on the north side of Big Ox Creek, using only hand labor. The house was made of brick. All of the finishing lumber used was black walnut which was whipsawed. A winding staircase led from the two front rooms, which were each 20 by 40 feet. The house was torn down in 1900 because it had become unsafe on the windy hill.
