Joe Chattin, 71, of Fredericktown, passed away Sept. 20, 2012 after a very courageous battle with cancer.
He was born on Sept. 12, 1941 in Bloomingburg, Ohio to Lon and Ada (Sea) Chattin. He graduated from Waverly High School in 1959 and the Ohio University College of Engineering in 1963. On Oct. 24, 1964, he married the former Karen Gay Gosling.
After college he was employed by the Newport News Va. Shipyard refueling nuclear reactors on the USS Enterprise and the USS Long Beach. Later he worked in the aerospace division of B.F. Goodrich in Troy, Ohio until 1975 when he and his wife purchased Cochran's Green House in Fredericktown.
His wife and daughter's interest in horses inspired him to create the first manure spreader to be pulled by a lawn tractor, which he sold through "Country Journal" magazine. His company, Country Manufacturing, incorporated in 1978 with that single product, followed by many other products for the horse and small farm business, all of which are sold through magazine and catalog sales.
Joe loved his work and being an entrepreneur. He acquired three other local businesses: Aristocrat Industries, Options Plus, and Gregg Manufacturing, eventually selling two of them to concentrate on his growing manufacturing business. With his children, he continued to be actively involved in the manufacture and marketing of the company's pet and lawn and garden products until his death.
Joe was known for his "larger than life" personality, his sense of humor and his generosity to the community and to his employees, whom he lovingly called "The Troops."
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Bill and Charles Chattin.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Gay; a daughter, Cami (John), and son Chad (Melissa); and three granddaughters Morgan, Taylor and Samantha.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the Fredericktown United Methodist Church. There will be no calling hours. The Snyder Funeral Home of Fredericktown is honored to serve the family of Joe Chattin.
