From the time he played his first game in 1926 with the New York Giants until he was replaced as the manager in 1948, he never wore the uniform of any other franchise. Batting left handed, he took full advantage of the short right field wall of the Polo Grounds by hitting the majority of his career 511 home runs there, a figure which was the third career highest when he retired as a player in 1947. Although about half way thru the 2003 season he ranks only number 16 in career homers, he still is among the top ten in career runs batted in [1,860] and career walks [1,708]. As a manager, though, he did not enjoy much success, more often finishing in the second division than in first, and twice finishing in last place of the eight-team National League. However, as a player, he enjoyed much more success. In 1936, and 1937 the Giants finished first, but lost the World Series both times to the Yankees. However, in 1933 his Giants defeated Washington in the WS, the Giants last WS victory till 1954. He was also selected to play in the All Star Game from 1934 - 1944. Finally, he received the greatest honor that baseball can bestow on a player when he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
