Sunrise ~ March 11, 1926 Sunset ~ June 8, 1990

I DEEPLY APPRECIATE YOUR KIND AND THOUGHTFUL VISITS TO HER.

My mom was the fifth of six children born to Thomas and Jane Duckworth. My grandfather wanted a brown-eyed blonde daughter born on his birthday and he got his wish the day my mother was born.

My mother's favorite color was RED.

My mother married my father Elvin Leavitt Rickard, on December 8, 1950 in Long Beach, California. They had one daughter.

Recently I found a poem that my father wrote my mother, when their love was so new, and seemed never-ending:

" My Ellie"

"Little honey colored blonde, with big brown eyes,
You've stolen my heart from me.
But I won't turn you in to the "Arm of the Law,"
For you are my Ellie, you see.
You've entered my life, and you're there to stay.
With your charm and sweetness, both night and day.
I know I'm lucky, I'll tell the World.
I love you dear, from toe to curl.
So, need you me, I'll be so near;
You'll never want for love and cheer."

~ E.L.R.

Sadly, their marriage would end in divorce in 1954.

Mom had an outrageous sense of humor and a fun-loving spirit. As a child she would play pranks on various family members; like the time that she hid her mother's dentures before she left for school!

Occasionally my mom would work for her father who was a funeral director. During the depression, those who had lost a loved one were particularly hard hit; especially during the holidays. Together, mom and her father would deliver frozen turkeys and canned goods to these families, leaving them on their front porches.

When my mother was twenty-one, she went to work at a small local airport. One blustery day, she held down one of the wings of an airplane, thus keeping it from colliding into the other planes. Her dashing young employer, Kirk Kerkorian was so impressed that he never forgot her. During one of her stays in Vegas, when he found out that she was in town, he gave her the best seat in the house (Priscilla's Presley's booth) during a performance in one of his hotels, as his own personal guest.

Throughout her life, mom could never stand to see anyone go hungry. She would reach out to anyone in need whether she knew them or not. She had a wonderful, loving and unselfish heart.

Most of her life was spent taking care of others. She had a healing touch, which served her well ~ as she later became a nurse.

She had a beautiful singing voice, that many thought sounded like Peggy Lee's. From the time that I was born, and for the rest of her life, she would often sing to me You're My Everything. Our family still talks about her fantastic cooking, her amazing homemaking abilities and of course her great love for all of us.

On June 8, 1990, Mom quietly slipped away while in her sleep, to be reunited with her eternal family. Tom Duckworth's little brown-eyed blonde daughter was home at last. She was 64 years young.

Only One Mother

You can only have one mother,
Patient kind and true;
No other friend in all the world,
Will be the same to you.

When other friends forsake you,
To your mother you will turn,
For all her loving kindness
She asks nothing in return,

As (I) look upon her picture,
Sweet memories (I) recall,
Of a face so full of sunshine,
And a smile for one and all,

Sweet Jesus, take this message,
To (my) dear mother up above;
Tell her how (I) miss her,
And give her all (my) love. ~ Anon.

Mama, Thank you! for SHARING me Life. For GIVING me LOVE. For being FORGIVING. For being THE BEST. And For showing me GOD, BEING the GREATEST. I LOVE YOU Mama. Thank you! ~ Anon.

~ IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW OLD I GET, WHENEVER I SEE ANYTHING NEW OR SPLENDID, I WANT TO CALL, " MOM, COME AND LOOK. " ~ Helen Exley ~
