David Beynon was a teacher and deputy headmaster at Pantglas Junior School in Aberfan, the school that fell victim to a sliding coal tip. He was found dead under the coal slurry trying to shelter 5 of his pupils. According to his son, his father and the children in the class all perished.

According to the website Pontypridd RFC, Dai was a star of the Pontypridd rugby team and was an outstanding back row forwardv and was expected to become a professional rugby player. Injuries likely convinced him to devote his time to teaching.
