Sculptor, born in London. He was taught drawing by his father, a surveyor, and at the age of 15 was apprenticed to a woodcarver. He studied sculpture in his own time, becoming a freind of the sculptor Peter Scheemakers. In 1772 he received a grant from the Royal Academy to travel to Rome as a student, where he spent seven years. He also travelled to St Petersburg, where he was commissioned to produce work by Catherine The great. He returned to England and became a full member of the RA in 1785. His funerary sculptures include monuments to Captain Westcott and Captain Burges in St Paul's Cathedral, and Sir Eyre Coote in Westminster Abbey. However, his most famous work is "Shakespeare attended by Painting and Poetry", now in the garden of New Place, Shakespeare's home in Stratford-on-Avon. Banks died in London, and was the first sculptor to be memorialised in Westminster Abbey.
