-- The funeral for Mr. Marion Norman Billings of 623 Simpson Drive was conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 1, at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Clay Waldrip officiated and burial followed in Chester Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Billings, 74, died Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born in Screven County, Ga. on Dec. 30, 1934, he was a son of the late James Marion and Byrdie Norman Billings. He attended school in Screven County, Ga. and Chester and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. For many years, Mr. Billings was the manager of Shell Oil Company in Chester and later retired from Haddon House Foods of Richburg. As a member of First Baptist Church, Mr. Billings served as deacon, a Sunday school teacher and youth leader. He was also Assistant Scout Master of Troop 64 for more than 20 years. He received the Silver Beaver Award, the Palmetto Award and the Order of the Arrow. Mr. Billings enjoyed cooking for the Men's Breakfast Club at church until his health declined.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Peggy Lee Billings; two sons, Michael Norman Billings and his wife, Susan Nunnery Billings, of Fort Lawn and James Todd Billings and his wife, Lori Holsonback Billings, of Chester; four grandchildren, Michael and Josh Billings of Lancaster and Tyler and Katherine Billings of Chester; a great-grandson, Matthew Billings of Lancaster; and two brothers, Robert "Bob" Billings of Vero Beach, Fla. and Jack Billings of North Myrtle Beach.
