Merle was a veteran of WWI, the first woman vet I've found in my family to date.

She was an active genealogist, the one who established eligibility for DAR based on Robert King (Rowan County, North Carolina). Her cousins in Missouri called her Aunt Meda, my dad called her Aunt Merle. I'm not sure which she preferred.

From her nephew John Painter

Aunt Merle had served as an Army nurse during WWI and was very proud of it and of me when I got my degree in Medicine in 1948. She was married to an insurance agent and lived for many years in Yakima, Washington. They had one child, a boy named Jimmy who was about my age. She moved to Seattle after her husband died and eventually ended up living at Wesley Terrace, a retirement home in Burien, Washington.
