Hades also welcomed his grandparents into his inner circle and we were all blessed and enriched by having him in our lives. We are grateful for more years than we could have reasonably expected, but there really would never have been enough.
Being a Blue Doberman, he had mild Color Dilution Alopecia (thin hair coat, not a health concern). He also had moderate Von Willebrand Disease (vWD), not uncommon in Dobermans and it did lengthen his recovery after neutering but caused no other problem. Unfortunately, more than fifty percent of Dobie's will develop Dialated Cardiomyopathy (DCM); some will die suddenly and unexpectedly but most will develop congestive heart failure, usually living less than two months from onset. Thankfully, Hades lived until old age before becoming symptomatic and we had a little time to prepare ourselves for the loss of our beautiful and beloved "pup."
All that being said, if you are seriously considering the addition of a moderately large, beautiful, dynamic, loving and loyal, extremely intelligent companion to your family, Doberman's are truly wonderful. You might go with the black and tan or a red though, they generally have better hair coats.
