John Joseph Grossman Obit
Born in Cleveland, Ohio on June 24, 1916. He was the son of Joseph and Ella, younger brother to Betty and Dorothy. Uncle John to nieces and nephews. Husband of 61 years to Mary, Daddy to Gay and Grandpa to Beverly.
John worked his way through a couple years in college as a deck hand on an Or boat, soda jerk in an ice cream parlor and bus boy in his sisters Sorority House at OU.
John met Mary, the women who completed him, while working at Motorist Mutual Ins Co. early 1941. In August of 1941 John joined the Army Air Corps. As a result of Pearl Harbor he ended up in France, Italy, Africa, and Central Europe supporting the WWII effort as an Air traffic Controller. During the 4 years he was gone he courted Mary via letters. Discharged with medals and honors in Oct. 1945, he went back to Ohio. On Nov. 3rd 1945 John was married to Mary and 25 months later they became parents of their only child, Gay Ellen.
John spent 40 years as an Insurance adjuster at various companies. At 36 he moved his family from Ohio to California. Living in LA for 2 years then relocating to San Diego for the next 46 years. John and Mary loved to travel and went on many trips with his sisters and brother-in-law. John acquired a love for jogging and for 20 years he was a student at SDSU in the Run for your life Program. He loved going 3 nights a week and met many life long friends during this time. After by-pass and knee replacement the jogging stopped and he would meet his Allied Gardens buddies and walk in the park.
For health reasons John & Mary sold their home and moved to Richland, WA July of 1999 to be closer to Gay & Beverly. His heart never left SD and he missed all his friends. He spent many happy hours in SD with his young friends Gary & Melissa, who showed him love and respect.
He will be remembered as the dad * grandpa who baked mountains of Christmas cookies every year. A great teacher for budgeting money. His priority was spending time with family or writing little notes and sending newspaper clippings. Sitting watching TV football or attending Charger games. Whistling happy tunes, wearing baseball caps and shorts. He was generous with everything he had. We will miss the person he was before we lost him to Alzheimer's. What was erased in him remains in us.
