James W. Marooney; longtime auto dealer, community leader: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice

San Diego Union-Tribune, The (CA) - Wednesday, January 14, 1998
Deceased Name: James W. Marooney; longtime auto dealer, community leader
James W. Marooney started his career in the automobile business at the top of the line.
After leaving the aerospace industry in the 1970s, he became vice president of his father's El Cajon Ltd. dealership, selling Mercedes-Benzes in East County.
Then, a decade ago, he joined Escondido Motors Ltd., another large Mercedes dealership, as general sales manager.
"There's a certain stigma about the auto business," said Angelo Damante, owner of the Escondido dealership. "Jim carried out my philosophy of not considering ourselves to be car people, of instilling a different type of atmosphere.
"He was genuine, with very special people skills. When you met him you became his friend."
Mr. Marooney, 53, died of cancer Sunday at his home in Escondido.
After moving to Escondido from East County a decade ago, Mr. Marooney joined Damante in supporting cultural and community causes, including the Boys & Girls Club of Escondido, the March of Dimes and the YMCA.
Among the benefit golf events he helped promote were the Junior Seau tournament at Rancho La Costa, the Escondido Auto Dealers Association tournament at Escondido Country Club and the Kids for Kash tournament, held in recent years at Vista Valley Country Club.
Mr. Marooney also was an avid golfer in his own right.
"He became very good at it," Damante said.
Mr. Marooney was born in New London, Conn., moved west and attended California State University Long Beach.
He earned a bachelor's degree and worked several years for McDonnell Douglas in Huntington Beach and in Bremen, Germany.
Mr. Marooney's father, James A. Marooney, opened El Cajon Ltd. in 1976 after working nearly 25 years in the auto industry. The younger Mr. Marooney played a key role in the business as it grew over the years from 10 employees to 60 by the time it was sold in 1988.
He is survived by his wife, Kimberly; a son, James T. Marooney of San Diego; his parents, James and Josephine Marooney of El Cajon; and a brother, Michael Marooney of Escondido.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow in Immaculata Catholic Church at the University of San Diego. Donations are suggested to the Cindy Matters Fund, No. 1567, UCSD Medical Center, Office of Community Relations, 200 W. Arbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92103-8230.
