Maria Nedza was born to Berthold Schelert and Elsa Rode Schelert on November 10, 1945, at Spital an der DRAU, Austria and passed away after a short illness on July 12, 2001 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha at the age of 55 years, eight months and two days. She was one of six children in the family.
She and her family came over to the United States and arrived in New York City on April 21, 1952. With the assistance of the Grace Lutheran Church, they relocated to Hebron. There, she attended grade school and graduated in 1964. Following graduation she lived and worked in Lincoln until her marriage.
She spent many years as a dedicated housewife and mother, raising and taking care of her family and helping her husband with the farm. She worked six years at Swingsters in Fairbury and later on, she began working at Blue Valley Nursing and Care Home. On December 18, 1992, she fulfilled a life long dream and graduated from Southeast Community College with a licensed practical nursing degree. She was employed there until her death.
Marie was married to Charles Eugene Nedza of Bruning on September 6, 1964 and to them four children were born, Charles Gregory, Cherie May, Charla May and Chandra Marie
Maria enjoyed sewing and gardening and had a love for taking care of others. She collected angels and enjoyed spending time with her grand children. Maria had a special gift of taking time to help others and graciously gave of herself and her time.
Maria was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Bruning and a member of Circle 1. She also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary, Durham-Mammen unit #166.
Maria was preceded in death by her father, Berthold Schelert, mother-in-law, Agnes Nedza and brother-in-law, Ira Brown.
She is survived by her husband, Charles E. of Bruning, one son, Charles Gregory; three daughters, Cherie (Kory) Hintz of Bruning, Charla Nedza of Wisner and Chandra (Earl) Hillman of Deshler; four grandchildren; mother, Elsa Schelert of Lincoln, father-in-law, Charles Nedza of Bruning; three brothers, Ewald(Kathe) Schelert of Longmont, Colo., Fred (Jenny) Schelert of Lincoln and Reinhart (Wanda) Schelert of Rochester Hill, Mich.; two sisters, Lily Brown of Morgantown, N.C. and Edith (Pat) Grossi of West Hartford, Conn.; two sisters-in-law, Rose Marie (Bud) Bruning of Bruning and Nancy (James) Vossler of Friend; and other relatives.
Funeral services were conducted at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bruning on Monday, July 16. Interment was in Bruning Public Cemetery.
