HENRY WATSON AND URSULA [FOX] BENSON

Henry Watson Benson was born September 29, 1833, in Conneaut, Ohio. He was the oldest son of Captain Henry and Mary Ann [Viets] Benson. He married Ursula Fox on December 2, 188. She was the daughter of Samuel and Diana Fox of Fox Road in Kingsville. She had one brother, Daniel Fox, who was the father of Leonarda [Fox] Ring and Charlie Fox. The Fox ancestors came from Wales*. Henry was born in the oldest Benson home on the south side of Lake Road, new Fralden Terraces. His father, Captain Henry Benson, transported cargo on Lake Erie on the schooner Reindeer in the middle 1800's. Henry Watson served in the Union Army during the Civil War.

"Wat and Suli," as they were called, were farmers on the bank of Lake Erie on Lake Road. They raised choice tobacco as did their neighbors. They would hand roll the cigars in the evenings. There was also a cigar factory on Lake Road where "Suli" worked as a girl. They had four children, Mary, Clinton, Frank and Verne.

Mary married William Brown and had three daughters, Sadie [Brown] Moses, Hattie [Brown] Moses and Alice [Brown] Brewer. Clint Married Gertrude Hickok and had two daughters, Marjorie [Benson] Adams and Ruth [Benson] Smith. Frank died in childhood. Vern married Clare Sturgeon and had five children, Albert, Roy, Emma, Agnes, and Theodore (See biography of Vern and Claire Benson].

Henry Watson was a Sunday School superintendent and Ursula taught Sunday School at the Amboy Methodist Church for many years. On every Memorial Day, Ursula Benson would pick red, white and blue flowers and take them by horse and wagon to Amboy Cemetery. Her granddaughter, Emma Louise [Benson] Enquist, would help her put them on all the soldiers' graves.

They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on December 2, 1908. They are buried in Amboy Cemetery, Conneaut, Ohio.

*No primary documentation yet found that takes this Fox line any further back than New Hampshire in the mid-1700s. Country of origin yet unknown.
