Obituary available at Cleveland Public Library:
Id#: 0060085
Name: Conger, James W.
Date: February 22, 1921
Source: Source unknown; Cleveland Necrology File, Reel #016.
Notes: Conger-James W., age 76 years, passed away on February 22, in St. Petersburg, Fla. Funeral Wade Memorial chapel, Lake View cemetery, Monday at 2 p. m. [Note that daughter May's obituary indicates James died in 1920.]
James (14) appears on the 1860 census in Washington Twp., Morrow Co., OH in the house of Archibal and Rebecca Auld, his grandparents, after the death of his parents.
James, wife Anna, children May, Charles, and Frank appear on the 1880 census in Cleveland, Cuyhoga Co., OH.
James, Anna, and son, Frank, appear on the 1910 census in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH. Last name appears in search as "Canger".
James Conger (70, born in PA) appears on the 1920 census in Cleveland, Cuyhoga Co., OH married to his second wife, Maud (41).
There is a death cert. No. 58934 online for newborn Margaret Jane Conger (born and died Nov. 2, 1915), the infant daughter of J. W. Conger and Maude A. Miller. The home address, 2072 E. 89th St., is near/similar to address for residence of Anna Conger as shown on Anna's death cert. as 2029 E. 89th St. in 1911.
A history of James W. Conger is provided at the following link, which proves and supports much of the above information: http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~usbios/Ohio/bios/cuyahoga/congerjw.txt
This site refers to James W. Conger as Colonel Conger. This could be an honorary title. However, James did serve in the Civil War and reenlisted for a second term afterwards. NARA pension record shows rank of Sergeant for a James W. Conger.
Above cite indicates James was a Sergeant.
James was a very prominent and successful businessman in the Cleveland area. He was involved in several organizatons and business, especially the roofing supplies and slate manufacturing industry. He was involved in politics and was a Presidential elector for the 21st district. His portrait is included in the 1900 listing of Men of Cleveland, along with that of his business partner (and relative?) David Auld. One source notes that David Auld was his cousin and James was raised by his Auld grandparents after the death of his parents. I cannot identify the parents of David at this point. Portrait of David Auld on file.
A possible obituary for David Auld follows:
Id#: 0008890
Name: Auld, David
Date: Dec. 16, 1927
Source: Cemetery record; Cleveland Necrology File, Reel #003.
Notes: Auld-David, beloved husband of Nellie Sayle, father of Louise Auld Lowry, died Dec. 14. Funeral Friday at 2:30 p. m. from late residence, 2891 Drummond Road, Shaker Heights. 3/12/1844 - 12/14/1927. Lake View Cemetery Cleveland, Ohio.
However, some info in this obituary (or the obituary itself) may not be correct as David Auld (born March 1855) appears on the 1900 census in Cleveland, OH with wife, Lilly J. born April 1857, and daughter Louise M. born December 1883. His occupation if correctly shown as a grate manufacturer.
