Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Pembroke, Wales, he served as a Captain in the 84th Regiment of Foot, British Army. At Bolandshahr, India, on September 28, 1857, the 9th Light Dragoons had charged through the town and were reforming on the Serai, when the enemy tried to close the entrance by drawing their carts across it. Captain Anson, taking a lance, dashed out of the gateway and rode into the middle of the enemy. Even though he was wounded, he knocked the drivers off their carts. At Lucknow, India, on November 16, 1857, Captain Anson entered the city with a storming party first when the gates burst open on his horse which was killed and he was slightly wounded. For conspicuous bravery, he was awarded the Victoria Cross December 24, 1858. He later achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in command of the 84th Regiment before retiring due to illness. He died at age 42 in at Cannes, France.
