Crimean War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born Essex, England, he joined the Army in 1842, was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and was a career soldier for his whole life. On September 20, 1854, at the Battle of Alma Crimea, serving as a Captain in the 23rd Regiment of Foot, he was the first to seize and capture one of the enemy's guns. After all his senior officers having been killed or wounded, he took over the command of the regiment and brought it safely out of action. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross and promoted Major. He went on to achieve the rank of Major General and was Commander of the Belfast District at the time of his death.
